ECAT 2026 Preparation Guide

ECAT is the 400-mark, 100-question multiple-choice entrance test UET Lahore has run for Punjab's public-sector engineering institutions since 1999. It lasts 100 minutes, each correct answer is worth 4 marks, and there is no negative marking. ECAT supplies 33% of the UET Taxila merit aggregate, whose official formula is 17% SSC + 50% HSSC Part-I + 33% entry test.

Key facts

Official ECAT dates and fee

ECAT is conducted by UET Lahore on the directions of the Government of Punjab, so the dates below come from the official ECAT portal rather than UET Taxila. UET Taxila applicants who take UET Taxila's own TCAT instead should see the TCAT registration and test dates.

The 5 official combinations

UET Lahore publishes ECAT in 5 subject combinations; you sit the one matching your FSc group, and the 90 non-English questions are divided equally among the three subjects in it.

  1. 1Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
  2. 2Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science
  3. 3Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
  4. 4Biology, Physics and Chemistry
  5. 5Mathematics, Statistics and Physics

Subject split and marking

UET Lahore's ECAT page is the source of record for the paper: 100 questions in 100 minutes, each worth 4 marks, ten of them English and the remaining ninety split across the three subjects of your combination. That page states the format only and lists no topics, so this guide does not list any either. Read the format where it is published: official ECAT format page.

The 3-Pass Time Management Strategy

  1. Pass 1
    0-40 minutes

Solve every direct theoretical question and 1-step numerical you recognize immediately. Skip anything that needs a second look — mark it and move on.

  2. Pass 2
    40-80 minutes

Return for complex 2-step calculations in Physics and Mathematics, now that the easy marks are already banked.

  3. Pass 3
    80-100 minutes

Return to every flagged question and answer all of them. UET Lahore states there is no negative marking in ECAT, so a blank earns nothing while an educated guess (after eliminating options) can only add marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who conducts ECAT and where are the dates published?
UET Lahore has conducted ECAT for Punjab's public-sector engineering institutions since 1999, on the directions of the Government of Punjab, and publishes the schedule on its own ECAT portal. The June 2026 cycle closed applications on 13 June 2026, ran tests from 16 to 21 June 2026 and released results on 30 June 2026.
How much does ECAT cost to apply for?
The official ECAT schedule lists an application fee of Rs. 3,000, paid as a challan before the enrolment deadline of 13 June 2026 for the June 2026 cycle.
How many questions are on the ECAT test?
The official ECAT portal gives 100 minutes for the test: 10 English questions plus 90 questions divided equally among the three subjects of your chosen combination (for FSc Pre-Engineering: 30 Mathematics, 30 Physics, 30 Chemistry). Each correct answer is worth 4 marks, so the paper totals 400 marks.
Does ECAT have negative marking?
No. UET Lahore's official ECAT page states there is no negative marking and no passing threshold.
How much time should I spend per ECAT question?
ECAT gives 100 minutes for 100 questions - about 1 minute per question on average. A 3-pass strategy (easy questions first, then 2-step calculations, then a final review of flagged questions) makes better use of that time than answering strictly in order.
How much does ECAT count toward UET Taxila's merit aggregate?
The official merit formula is 17% SSC + 50% HSSC Part-I + 33% entry test, so ECAT contributes the 33% entry-test component alongside 50% from FSc/HSSC Part-I marks and 17% from Matric marks. Use UET GPT's merit calculator to convert your practice ECAT score directly into a projected aggregate.
